Hway Adv 5th ed SB12 Simple vs Continuous

• discussing differences between simple and continuous in different forms (past, present, perfects, modals...)

  Some interesting language:

• emotional blackmail
• to vote with your feet
• to exacerbate
• to swat /  a fly-swatter
• to load /to unload  / loads of... (quantifier)
• While the cat's away, the mice will play!
• To pull someone's leg

Be careful with:

• the use of the perfect
  • describes something previous to a moment (does not define the moment a thing happened, but rather it's impact at the moment we are describing)
  • I'm hungry - I haven't had breakfast
  • I was hungry - I hadn't had breakfast
  • I will have retired by the time I'm 40 years old!
